Event Description

This special concert event will feature iconic composer Robert Buckley's greatest works for band alongside the world premiere of his brand new piece, Arabian Rhapsody. Everyone is welcome! Tickets are by donation, with a "Pay what you can" option. Tickets for all students are free.

In honour of Buckley turning 80 earlier this year, this concert will be a beautifully curated program of his most imaginative and beloved concert band repertoire, spanning original works like the gorgeous Cathedral Grove to a fantastic arrangement of the theme from Doctor Who.

If you are not in the elite wind band nerd club or a regular at Meridiem Wind Orchestra concerts you may be wondering, "Who is Robert Buckley?". Robert (Bob) Buckley has a diverse career as a composer, arranger, performer, producer, recording artist and conductor. In the pop world, he has created several albums and hit songs with labels such as CBS and A&M. The number one single Letting Go won him a gold record. He has conducted and arranged for major artists such as Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan and Aerosmith. In the film and television world, he has scored numerous award-winning shows for Disney, Alliance, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, CBC and the Cartoon Network. In the live stage world, Buckley has composed music for contemporary dance, musicals and large-scale worldwide television events including the Calgary Olympics, the Victoria Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver Olympics and the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony with Cirque Du Soleil. He composed This Is My Home for the Canadian Pavilion at the World Expo – a song that has been performed at every Canada Day since and has become a Canadian tradition. He lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada with his wife, choreographer and director, Marlise McCormick.

Near and dear to our hearts, Buckley has composed a wide range of music for wind band for everyone from beginners to professionals, with his works being played in local school band rooms and across the world. Join us on Tuesday, November 10th at the Dave Dunnet Theatre to hear a selection of our favourites. We are delighted that Bob has selected Meridiem Wind Orchestra to premiere his brand new work, Arabian Rhapsody. Don't miss it!

Meridiem Wind Orchestra is a unique ensemble that was inaugurated in the Spring of 2013. Although Victoria boasts a rich selection of community ensembles, the Meridiem Wind Orchestra stands out due to its complex repertoire which demands a skill level that only highly trained and dedicated instrumentalists obtain. Past programs have included wind ensemble repertoire of historic works, popular and contemporary music, orchestral transcriptions, as well as world premieres of new compositions by Canadian composers.
