All proceeds go to Anakbayan Victoria - Lekwungen. Anakbayan (“Youth of the Nation”) is a progressive Filipino youth organization that organizes for the rights and welfare of Filipinos in so-called Canada & in the Philippines. Grounded in the experiences of the masses, they emphasize community organizing and political education to address the worsening conditions Filipino youth and students face. Anakbayan Victoria - Lekwungen situates these struggles within the broader issues in the Philippines, including fascism, a backward and underdeveloped agricultural sector, and imperialist policies that displace Filipinos and compel many to seek work overseas. Their goal is to advance the collective struggle for genuine national liberation and justice for Filipinos worldwide - in the belief that a strike against imperialism in one place is a strike against imperialism everywhere. Join us this evening to hear more about what Anakbayan does, and for the launch of their campaign, Filipino Youth Unite Against Fascism!
Commie Bop is now offered through South Island Worker's Cultural Education League! Check out our Choir, Outdoor Club, Worker's Cafe, Book Club, and Soccer Team.

About Commie Bop: A Commie Bop is freedom in motion: a song, a poem, a spell, a skit, a dance against the grind of colonial capitalism. It’s where creativity smashes exploitation, where solidarity squeezes alienation, and where we (yes, we, the ridiculous and unruly) celebrate our collective fire. This is a space to howl anti-capitalist anthems, share art that bites back, and honour past and future generations. Leftist debates? Vital. But tonight we revel in the kaleidoscope of our movement, checking our purity test kits at the door with our hearts open to each other’s stories. We have license to be silly little peasants! Think Carnival, mocking lords and kings…
Open Mic Sets: Your offering does NOT need to involve a complex analysis - our day-to-day experiences put us into the crosshairs of capitalism’s contradictions. Sets should be 10 minutes or less. Please explain why you chose or wrote what you’re sharing. Performers are encouraged to make space for audience participation - teach us your chorus, wrangle us into your skit, add call and response, or bring up Alice to play the tambourine or the triangle.
All acts should, in their own unique way, call for an end to exploitation and discrimination. This space celebrates dignity. Check lyrics for oppressive and triggering language (racist, sexist, ableist, SWERFS, TERFS, etc.). We fight systems, not each other. Please respect the venue.
For physical events that happen at a specific time. For example a concert, or dance performance. If there are multiple shows, you can still duplicate your event to cover them all.
